We all grow attached to our beloved L.L.Bean Boots. Luckily, some of our customers have figured out a way to never let them go by turning them into planters. Rock Hudson dons a bright red Chamois Shirt in 1955. L.L. intended the Chamois Cloth Shirt be used on hunting and fishing trips and introduced it in bright red to “repel black flies” and to be “safe for dragging in deer without a coat.” Here’s our version of the iconic shirt.

L.L.Bean opened its first showroom for women in 1954, which was overseen by Hazel Bean (pictured here fishing with a friend) and L.L.’s wife Claire. The two convinced him that women needed something to do while their husbands shopped for fishing gear and hunting outerwear.

In the 1960s and 1970s, L.L.Bean became so popular that the volume of mail orders the Freeport post office received was too much for them to handle. To help streamline the mail sorting operations, the U.S. Postal Service granted L.L.Bean its own zip code, 04033, on March 2, 1976 - 36 years ago today.
