Meet Armando, our Italian pattern maker.
A master patternmaker from New England by way of Italy, Armando is the man behind our impeccably tailored, consistently flattering clothing. We took some time out of our day to speak with the dapper Italian about his life, his experience and how he approaches fit for L.L.Bean Signature.
“I’ve been doing this since 8 or 9 years old… I love what I do. 12-hour days non-stop and I couldn’t be happier.”
Unlike most boys growing up in the southern Italian town of Avellino, Armando preferred fine suits over soccer. He started studying patternmaking with local tailors before the age of ten; a few years later, he was telling the tailors what to do.
“It’s a lifelong commitment. If you want to be good at something, you have to start young.”
Fast forward 50 years and you’ll find Armando in his New England studio, working exclusively on patterns for L.L.Bean Signature. Along with his partner Judi (who’s no slouch herself with 25 years in the business), he carefully crafts his patterns by hand. In a day and age when computers do most of the work, Armando’s talent lies in his ability to look at a sketch and find – almost instinctually – the perfect proportions.
“A little bit of European fit, but with comfort.”
Armando’s unique upbringing is a match made in heaven for the Signature Fit. His preference for slim, modern style is part and parcel of his Italian roots. His many years in New England have inspired him to fold in comfort and practicality. But most of all, Armando tells us, he wants you to look and feel great in his clothes.
“Some are very good at pants, jackets, shirts. Because I’ve been in the business so long, I’ve done it all.”
As a man who has spent his entire life around clothing, we asked Armando to list his personal favorites in the Signature collection. He’s a big fan of the Italian Wool Pant and Blazer for her, and the Sportsman’s Shirt for him. From Italy to New England to you.
